The Bakhtyār Nāma: A Persian Romance
The Bakhtyār Nāma is a Persian romance built on a frame story. Bakhtyār, a foundling raised by robbers, rises high at a king's court, is accused by the ten viziers who envy him and is sentenced to death. Each day he postpones the execution by telling the king a story about the dangers of haste and the rewards of patience, and nine tales are told before the truth of his own birth is revealed. The pattern is close to that of the Thousand and One Nights and the Book of Sindibad. This edition presents Sir William Ouseley's translation, first published in 1801, with an introduction and notes on the romance's many versions. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
