The Book of Enoch is a Jewish apocalyptic work composed in stages between the third century BC and the first century AD, quoted in the Epistle of Jude, prized by some early Christians, and then lost to the West until the Scottish traveler James Bruce brought back Ethiopic manuscripts in 1773. It tells how the patriarch Enoch, who walked with God, was shown the fall of the angels who took human wives and taught men forbidden arts, the places of punishment, the courses of the stars, the Son of Man who will judge the earth, and the history of the world to come. Richard Laurence, Archbishop of Cashel, made the first English translation in 1821; this is the revised edition of 1883. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
