The Book of Enoch is a collection of Jewish writings from the last centuries before the common era, attributed to the patriarch who, in Genesis, walked with God and was taken up alive. Lost to the West for a thousand years, it survived in Ethiopic. It contains the story of the Watchers, the angels who took human wives and taught forbidden arts, and of the flood that followed; Enoch's journeys through heaven and earth; the Similitudes, with their visions of the Son of Man and the final judgment; an astronomical book on the courses of the sun and moon; and dream visions of the history of Israel. R. H. Charles, the leading scholar of the apocryphal literature, made this translation, with introduction and notes. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
