W. R. S. Ralston, an assistant in the British Museum library who had taught himself Russian, published Russian Folk-Tales in 1873 to introduce English readers to the great collection Alexander Afanasyev had gathered from the peasants of Russia. He arranges the stories by theme, with chapters on tales of the supernatural, mythological tales, the Baba Yaga and her hut on hens' legs, Koshchei the Deathless, water spirits and wood demons, legends of the saints and the Devil, ghost stories, and tales of the dead who walk, and he surrounds the translations with commentary comparing Russian versions to those of Germany, India and the Slavic south. It remains a pleasant and learned introduction to a world of frosts, firebirds and clever fools. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
