The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night — Volume 01 (of 10)
King Shahryar, having found his wife unfaithful, resolves to marry a new bride each night and have her executed in the morning, until the vizier's daughter Shahrazad volunteers and begins a story she does not finish. This first of ten volumes contains the opening of the frame tale and the stories of the early nights: the trader and the jinni, the fisherman and the jinni, the porter and the three ladies of Baghdad with the tales of the three kalandars, the three apples, and the long comic sequence of the hunchback, the barber and his six brothers. Sir Richard Francis Burton's translation, privately printed from 1885, is complete, unexpurgated and heavily annotated with his own observations on Eastern life. His foreword opens the volume. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
