The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood

by Howard Pyle

About 7 h 24 min of reading24 chapters

Robin Hood, outlawed as a youth for killing a forester in a quarrel, gathers his band in Sherwood Forest and spends the rest of his days robbing the rich, feeding the poor, outwitting the Sheriff of Nottingham and competing in shooting matches in disguise. Howard Pyle wove the old ballads into a single sequence of episodes: the fight with Little John on the bridge, the recruitment of Will Scarlet, Allan a Dale and Friar Tuck, the rescue of Will Stutely, the visit of King Richard, and the hero's death at Kirklees. Published in 1883 with Pyle's own illustrations and decorative borders, written in a mock-medieval English of his own devising, the book shaped nearly every later Robin Hood from the films onward. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
