The Story of King Arthur and his Knights
The Story of King Arthur and His Knights, published in 1903, is the first of the four volumes in which Howard Pyle retold the Arthurian legends for young readers, writing and illustrating the book himself. The first part, the Book of King Arthur, tells of the sword in the anvil, the winning of Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake, and the winning of Guinevere; the second, the Book of Three Worthies, gives the stories of Merlin and Vivien, of Sir Pellias and the Lady Ettard, and of Sir Gawaine and the loathly lady. Pyle writes in a deliberately archaic English and his full-page pen drawings and decorated chapter heads remain among the best known images of Camelot. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
