Howard Pyle's Book of pirates : fiction, fact & fancy concerning the buccaneers & marooners of the Spanish Main
Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates was assembled in 1921, after the illustrator's death, from the stories and essays about the Spanish Main that he had written and pictured for magazines over thirty years. It opens with a history of the buccaneers and marooners, then turns to fiction: the adventures of Henry Mostyn under Captain Morgan at Panama, an old-time tale of the days of Captain Kidd, Tom Chist and the treasure box, Blueskin the pirate, Captain Scarfield, and the ruby of Kishmoor. Pyle's pirates, swaggering in sashes and earrings, fixed the image that film and fiction have used ever since, and his color plates and drawings are the heart of the book.
