Howard Pyle (1853–1911) was an American illustrator and author, born in Wilmington, Delaware, to a Quaker family, who became the most influential American illustrator of his generation and the founder of what came to be called the Brandywine School. He wrote and illustrated The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood (1883), Otto of the Silver Hand, Men of Iron and a four-volume retelling of the Arthurian legends, inventing a mock-medieval prose to go with his decorated pages. His pirate paintings fixed the look of the pirate in the popular imagination. He taught N. C. Wyeth and Maxfield Parrish, and died in Florence while studying mural painting.
