The Marriage of Heaven and Hell
The Marriage of Heaven and Hell is one of the illuminated books that William Blake etched, printed and colored by hand around 1790 to 1793. It is a short, furious, often funny work in prose and verse, partly a parody of Swedenborg. Blake argues that what religion calls good and evil are really the two contraries without which there is no progression, that energy is eternal delight, and that the poets and prophets have always known more than the priests. The Proverbs of Hell, including the road of excess leading to the palace of wisdom, are the most quoted part, and the Memorable Fancies describe Blake dining with Isaiah and Ezekiel and touring a printing house in Hell.
