by William Blake

About 1 h 43 min of reading102 chapters

This selection of William Blake's poems, chosen and introduced by the poet Alice Meynell, offers the shorter work of the visionary engraver who was dismissed as mad in his lifetime and recognized as one of the English Romantics afterward. It begins with the Poetical Sketches of his youth, including the dramatic fragment King Edward the Third, then gives the Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience in full, with The Lamb, The Tyger, London and The Chimney Sweeper. Later sections draw on the Rossetti and Pickering manuscripts, with Auguries of Innocence and The Mental Traveller, and close with extracts from the prophetic books Jerusalem, Tiriel and The Book of Thel. Meynell's introduction takes Blake's strangeness seriously without explaining it away. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
