Bacon's Essays, and Wisdom of the Ancients

by Francis Bacon

About 7 h 36 min of reading109 chapters

This volume brings together two works of Francis Bacon. The Essays, which he enlarged through three editions between 1597 and 1625, are short pieces of worldly counsel on truth, death, revenge, marriage, friendship, riches, gardens, studies and some fifty other subjects, written in a packed, aphoristic prose that rewards slow reading. The Wisdom of the Ancients, first published in Latin in 1609, takes thirty-one classical myths, from Cassandra and Prometheus to the Sphinx, and reads each as a disguised lesson in politics, natural philosophy or morals. The edition includes a biographical notice of Bacon and notes. Together the two books show the statesman and the philosopher of science using the same compressed instrument.
