The Advancement of Learning
The Advancement of Learning, published in 1605, is Francis Bacon's first major work in English and the opening statement of his lifelong project to reform knowledge. The first book, addressed to James I, defends learning against its detractors in church, state and the learned professions themselves and praises its dignity. The second book undertakes a survey of all the knowledge then possessed, divided into history, poetry and philosophy, and marks out the gaps: the fields that are deficient and need new inquiry, from the history of nature and of trades to the study of the mind, ethics and civil business. Bacon later expanded this book into Latin as De Augmentis Scientiarum. This edition includes an introduction by Henry Morley.
