The Essays or Counsels, Civil and Moral
Francis Bacon published ten short essays in 1597, enlarged them to thirty-eight in 1612, and issued the final collection of fifty-eight in 1625, the year before his death. They are the first essays in English and among the most quoted: Of Truth, Of Death, Of Revenge, Of Adversity, Of Marriage and Single Life, Of Love, Of Great Place, Of Friendship, Of Riches, Of Gardens, Of Studies. Bacon wrote them, he said, to come home to men's business and bosoms, and they are worldly counsel from a lawyer and statesman who had risen to Lord Chancellor and fallen, condensed into sentences that have the finality of proverbs. Some studies are to be tasted, others swallowed, and some few chewed and digested. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
