New Atlantis

by Francis Bacon

About 1 h 03 min of reading2 chapters

New Atlantis is the unfinished utopian fable that Francis Bacon left at his death and that was published in 1626. A ship bound from Peru for China is blown off course and reaches Bensalem, an island in the Pacific unknown to Europe, whose people are Christian, courteous and hospitable to strangers under strict rules. The narrator learns of the island's history, its customs of marriage and family, and above all of Salomon's House, a college of natural philosophers who conduct experiments, keep instruments, send out agents to gather the knowledge of other nations and use what they learn "for the relief of man's estate." The description of this research institution anticipated the scientific academies founded later in the century. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
