Novum organum
Novum Organum, published in Latin in 1620, is the part of Francis Bacon's unfinished Great Instauration in which he sets out a new method for the sciences, meant to replace the logic of Aristotle's Organon. Written as a series of aphorisms, the first book attacks the obstacles to knowledge, above all the four idols of the tribe, the cave, the marketplace and the theater, the habits of mind and language that distort what we observe. The second book describes how true induction should work, gathering instances, excluding false causes and rising gradually from particulars to general laws, and illustrates the method with an inquiry into the nature of heat. Bacon's call for patient, cooperative experiment made him a founding figure of modern science. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
