Myths of the Cherokee

by James Mooney

Extract from the Nineteenth Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology

About 21 h 21 min of reading178 chapters

Myths of the Cherokee was published in 1900 as part of the nineteenth annual report of the Bureau of American Ethnology. James Mooney had lived among the Cherokee of North Carolina for years, learning from the elders and the keepers of the sacred formulas, and the book opens with a long history of the nation from first contact to the removal of the 1830s and the Eastern Band's survival. The myths themselves, more than a hundred, are grouped as cosmogonic stories, animal stories, local legends and historical traditions: how the world was made, why the possum's tail is bare, the Uktena serpent, the Little People, the lost settlements. Notes compare them with the traditions of other peoples and name the storytellers. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
