The Ghost-dance religion and the Sioux outbreak of 1890
James Mooney, an ethnologist with the Bureau of American Ethnology, visited many tribes to study the Ghost Dance, the religious movement that spread across the American West after 1889, and published his report in 1896. He places it in a long line of Native American prophetic movements, from the Delaware Prophet of Pontiac's time and Tenskwatawa, brother of Tecumseh, to Smohalla and the Shakers of Puget Sound. He then describes the visions of the Paiute prophet Wovoka, the doctrine and ceremony of the dance, the crisis among the Sioux that ended at Wounded Knee, and the songs of many tribes. Its sympathetic approach makes it a landmark of American ethnography. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
