James Mooney, an ethnologist with the Smithsonian's Bureau of Ethnology, published The Sacred Formulas of the Cherokees in 1891 after fieldwork among the Eastern Cherokee in North Carolina. Cherokee medicine men had written down their prayers and healing formulas in the syllabary invented by Sequoyah, and Mooney obtained several of their manuscripts, notably that of the healer Swimmer. He explains how the formulas were collected, describes Cherokee ideas of disease as the work of animals, ghosts and witches, their plants and treatments, gods, color symbolism and ritual language, and then gives a selection of formulas in Cherokee with English translations and commentary.
