James Mooney, an ethnologist of the Bureau of American Ethnology, published his Calendar History of the Kiowa Indians in the bureau's annual report for 1895-96, issued in 1898. The core of the work is a set of Kiowa pictographic calendars, painted records in which each summer and winter is marked by a picture of its most memorable event, kept by Dohásän, Set-t'an and Anko. Mooney reproduces and explains them year by year, and around them builds a history of the Kiowa from their memories of the north and the Black Hills through their alliance with the Comanche, epidemics, treaties and wars on the southern plains, to life on the reservation. A Kiowa glossary completes the study. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
