Angelo De Gubernatis (1840–1913) was an Italian orientalist, philologist and man of letters. Born in Turin and trained in Sanskrit at Berlin, he held chairs of Sanskrit and comparative literature at Florence and later at Rome, founded and edited several reviews including the Rivista Europea, and compiled large biographical dictionaries of contemporary writers. His Zoological Mythology (1872), written in English, and its sequel on the mythology of plants applied the solar theories of Max Müller to animal and plant lore across the Indo-European world. He also wrote verse dramas, traveled in India and married a cousin of the anarchist Bakunin, whose ideas briefly cost him his first professorship.
