About 10 h 24 min of reading201 chapters

The Works of Aphra Behn, Volume I opens the six-volume edition of the first professional woman writer in English, prepared by Montague Summers and published in 1915, the first collected edition ever attempted. Summers prefaces it with a memoir that clears away earlier legends about Behn's life and discusses her portraits. The volume contains four plays: both parts of The Rover, or The Banished Cavaliers, her most successful comedy, in which the libertine Willmore and his fellow exiles pursue love and money in Naples and Madrid during carnival; The Dutch Lover, an early Spanish-style intrigue; and The Roundheads, or The Good Old Cause, a political satire on the Commonwealth. Each play has an argument, a stage history and notes. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first act is free.
