The Visigothic Code, also known as the Forum Judicum, is the body of law issued by the Visigothic kings of Spain in the seventh century, which remained in use long after their kingdom fell. This English version was translated from the Latin by S. P. Scott and published in 1910 for the Comparative Law Bureau of the American Bar Association. Its twelve books cover the making of law, judges and court procedure, witnesses and wills, marriage and divorce, inheritance and guardianship, property, crime and punishment, and slavery, and they end with harsh laws against heretics and Jews. Scott's preface presents the code as a record of the customs and beliefs of its age. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening pages are free.
