The Virginian, published in 1902 and dedicated to Theodore Roosevelt, is the novel that gave the Western its shape. A tenderfoot narrator arriving at Medicine Bow, Wyoming, meets the tall, soft-spoken cowhand known only as the Virginian, hears him answer an insult with When you call me that, smile, and follows him over several years on Judge Henry's ranch. The Virginian courts Molly Stark Wood, the schoolteacher from Vermont, rises to foreman, takes part in the lynching of rustlers that includes his old friend Steve, and faces the outlaw Trampas in the street at sundown. Owen Wister, a Philadelphian who had summered in Wyoming since 1885, wrote it as an elegy for a vanished life.
