The Upanishads
This volume presents three of the principal Upanishads, the Isa, the Katha and the Kena, in the translation and commentary of Swami Paramananda, a monk of the Ramakrishna Order. The Upanishads are the philosophical books of the Veda, composed in the first millennium BC, and these three contain much of their most quoted teaching: the Isa on the one Self that pervades all things, the Katha on the boy Nachiketas who questions Death about what survives the body, and the Kena on the power behind the senses. Paramananda, whose translation grew out of classes given in Boston and was first printed in 1913 and 1914, keeps the verse form, glosses Sanskrit terms in brackets and adds a commentary to each passage. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
