The Story of the Volsungs (Volsunga Saga); with Excerpts from the Poetic Edda

The Story of the Volsungs is the thirteenth-century Icelandic prose saga of Sigmund and his son Sigurd, who slays the dragon Fafnir, wins the cursed gold, wakes the valkyrie Brynhild on her mountain and forgets her for Gudrun, with the betrayals, murders and vengeance that follow down to the fall of the Niblungs. It preserves in connected form the legend that also lies behind the German Nibelungenlied and Wagner's Ring. This translation by Eiríkr Magnússon and William Morris, first published in 1870, is deliberately archaic in diction, and it is accompanied by Morris's versions of related poems from the Poetic Edda. Morris called it the great story of the North. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
