About 1 h 32 min of reading25 chapters

The Spanish Tragedy, written by Thomas Kyd in the late 1580s, was a popular success on the Elizabethan stage and set the pattern for the English revenge tragedy, including Hamlet. The ghost of Andrea, a Spanish courtier killed in battle, watches the action with the spirit of Revenge. When Horatio, the son of the old marshal Hieronimo, is murdered for his love of Bel-imperia, Hieronimo searches for the killers, struggles with grief and madness, and finally takes his revenge through a play within the play. This edition keeps the original Elizabethan spelling of an early printing, which gives the text an archaic look but remains readable. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first act is free.
