by Richard Brinsley Sheridan

About 1 h 56 min of reading25 chapters

The School for Scandal, first performed at Drury Lane in 1777, is Richard Brinsley Sheridan's best-known play and a high point of the eighteenth-century comedy of manners. Lady Sneerwell and her circle manufacture gossip for pleasure; the brothers Joseph and Charles Surface, one a hypocrite of sentiment and the other an honest spendthrift, compete for the ward Maria and for the good opinion of their rich uncle Sir Oliver, who returns from India in disguise to test them; and old Sir Peter Teazle quarrels with his young country wife. The screen scene of the fourth act is among the most celebrated in English drama. This edition includes Garrick's prologue and Sheridan's dedicatory verses to Mrs. Crewe. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first act is free.
