The Scarlet Pimpernel

by Baroness Orczy

About 5 h 39 min of reading31 chapters

The Scarlet Pimpernel, published in 1905 after the success of the stage version, created the type of the masked hero with a secret identity. During the Terror of 1792 a band of English gentlemen led by the mysterious Scarlet Pimpernel spirits French aristocrats out from under the guillotine, leaving only a drawing of a small red flower behind. In London, the brilliant Marguerite Blakeney despises her husband, Sir Percy, a wealthy fop who seems to care for nothing but his cravats. When the agent Chauvelin blackmails her into helping unmask the Pimpernel, she discovers that she has been wrong about more than one man. Baroness Orczy wrote many sequels, but none matched the pace of the original. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
