The sailor's Sabbath

by Titus Coan

About 42 min of reading1 chapters

The Sailor's Sabbath is a tract by Titus Coan, the American missionary at Hilo on the island of Hawaii, printed by the Hawaiian Tract Society in Honolulu in 1846. Addressed to seamen, and in particular to the crews of the whaling ships that then crowded the Hawaiian ports, it argues that the Sabbath is as much the sailor's right and need as the landsman's, and it urges masters and owners to spare their men unnecessary work on that day and the men themselves to use it for rest, reading and worship. Coan writes from more than twenty years of acquaintance with sailors, and the little pamphlet is a document of the missionary and temperance movements in the Pacific.
