The Mask, published in 1913, opens at a breakfast table on Gramercy Park, where Kenneth Traynor reads that a diamond second only to the Koh-i-noor has been found on land belonging to his mining company in South Africa. He sails to bring the stone home, and the novel turns on the existence of a twin brother, long lost and far from honest, who sees in the resemblance a chance to take Kenneth's place, his fortune and his wife. Arthur Hornblow, editor of Theatre Magazine and a practiced hand at turning stage melodrama into fiction, builds the story on recognitions, a shipwreck, a stolen jewel and a woman who cannot quite believe the man in front of her. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
