The Koran (Al-Qur'an)

by Anonymous

Translated by J. M. RodwellAbout 13 h 32 min of reading118 chapters

This is J. M. Rodwell's English version of the Koran, first published in 1861 and reissued here with an introduction by G. Margoliouth. Rodwell, an Anglican clergyman and orientalist, set the suras not in their traditional order but in the sequence in which he believed they had been revealed, so the book opens with the short, urgent Meccan passages on judgment, mercy and the signs of God in nature, and moves toward the longer Medinan suras on law, community and war. Each sura keeps its traditional number alongside Rodwell's, and his footnotes explain allusions, names and variant readings. For more than a century it was among the most widely read English translations. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
