The King's Mirror (Speculum regale-Konungs skuggsjá)
The King's Mirror is an Old Norse work of instruction written in Norway in the thirteenth century by an unknown author. It takes the form of a dialogue in which a father answers his son's questions about the right way to live. The first part follows the life of a merchant and turns into a remarkable survey of the northern world: tides and winds, the marvels of Ireland and Iceland, volcanic fires, whales and sea monsters, the climate of Greenland and the northern lights. The second part moves to the royal court, its manners and duties. Laurence Marcellus Larson's English translation, with introduction and notes, appeared in 1917. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
