The Institutes of Justinian is the textbook of Roman law issued by the emperor in 533 for first-year students, alongside his Digest and Code, and translated here by the Oxford jurist J. B. Moyle. Its four books follow the order of the older Institutes of Gaius: the law of persons, with slavery, marriage, adoption and guardianship; the law of things, ownership, servitudes, wills and legacies; obligations arising from contract, with sale, hire, partnership and agency; and obligations arising from delict, together with actions and procedure. The text is brief and clear, and through the medieval universities it shaped the legal vocabulary of Europe. Moyle's translation has been the standard English version since 1889. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
