The Dabistán, or School of Manners, is a seventeenth-century Persian survey of the religions known in Mughal India, by an author whose identity is still debated and who claims to have questioned believers of each faith in person. This second volume of the English translation by David Shea and Anthony Troyer, published in 1843, contains the chapters on the religious systems of the Hindus, set out in twelve sections on their philosophical schools and sects; on a religion the translators connect with Tibet; on the Jews; on the Christians, described partly from conversations with European priests; and on Islam, Sunni and Shia. The tone is curious and largely even-handed, and the translators' notes compare its reports with European scholarship. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
