The Dabistán, or School of Manners, is a seventeenth-century Persian survey of the religions practiced in Mughal India and Iran, written by an author whose identity scholars still debate and who claims to have learned from believers of each faith directly. This first volume of the English translation by David Shea and Anthony Troyer, published in 1843, opens with Troyer's long preliminary discourse on how the book came to European attention through Sir William Jones, on its author and on his sources. It then begins the work itself with the chapter on the religion of the Parsis, presenting the beliefs and prophets of a Persian sect in sometimes startling detail. The translators' notes help situate an unusual text. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
