Leader Scott, the pen name of the English writer Lucy Baxter, who lived in Florence, published The Cathedral Builders in 1899. Her subject is the Comacine Masters, a guild of builders and sculptors named after the region of Lake Como, whom she believed to have carried the traditions of Roman architecture through the early Middle Ages. She follows them under the Lombard kings and Charlemagne, traces what she saw as their influence on Norman, German, Saxon and Irish building, and continues through the Romanesque and Gothic lodges of Modena, Siena, Orvieto, Florence, Milan, Venice and Rome. Later historians have doubted her theory, but the book is richly illustrated and full of observation. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
