The Catacombs of Rome, and Their Testimony Relative to Primitive Christianity
The Catacombs of Rome, and Their Testimony Relative to Primitive Christianity, published in 1874, is a study by the Canadian Methodist minister W. H. Withrow of the underground cemeteries of the early Roman Christians. He describes the origin, extent and construction of the catacombs and their rediscovery, and then reads the evidence they contain: the inscriptions, with their formulas of hope and their record of ordinary lives, the paintings and symbols, the fish, the anchor, the Good Shepherd and the scenes from scripture, and the sarcophagi and lamps. Withrow writes as a Protestant and argues that the monuments support a simple early faith rather than later Roman doctrines, so his conclusions are contested, but his survey was thorough for its day.
