The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night — Volume 09 (of 10)

Translated by Sir Richard Francis BurtonAbout 11 h 05 min of reading29 chapters

The ninth volume of Sir Richard Francis Burton's unexpurgated translation of the Arabian Nights, first issued privately to subscribers in the mid-1880s, continues Shahrazad's nightly storytelling. Its longest piece is the story of King Jali'ad of Hind and his wazir Shimas, a frame enclosing a chain of animal fables and parables: the mouse and the cat, the crow and the serpent, the blind man and the cripple, the foolish fisherman. Then come some of the liveliest comic and marvelous tales of the collection, including "Abu Kir the Dyer and Abu Sir the Barber," "Abdullah the Fisherman and Abdullah the Merman" and "Kamar al-Zaman and the Jeweller's Wife." Burton's dense notes on Arab custom, language and sexuality run beneath the text throughout. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
