The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night — Volume 03 (of 10)
The third volume of Sir Richard Francis Burton's The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night, published in 1885, completes the long romance of King Omar bin al-Nu'uman and his sons Sharrkan and Zau al-Makan, a chronicle of wars between Muslims and Greeks with the tales of the Hashish Eater and Hammad the Badawi set inside it. There follows a cycle of animal fables told by the birds, beasts and the carpenter: the water-fowl and the tortoise, the wolf and the fox, the falcon and the partridge, the hedgehog and the wood-pigeons and others. The volume then turns to the love story of Ali bin Bakkar and Shams al-Nahar and begins the tale of Kamar al-Zaman. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
