The Blue Bird, first staged in Moscow by Stanislavski in 1908, is Maurice Maeterlinck's fairy play for children and adults. On Christmas Eve, Tyltyl and Mytyl, the children of a poor woodcutter, are visited by the Fairy Bérylune, who sends them to find the Blue Bird of happiness for her sick little girl. Guided by Light and accompanied by their Dog, their Cat and the souls of Bread, Sugar, Fire, Water and Milk, they travel through the Land of Memory, the Palace of Night, the Forest, the Palace of Happiness, a graveyard and the Kingdom of the Future. This English translation by Alexander Teixeira de Mattos keeps the play's mix of fantasy, humor and gentle wisdom. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first act is free.
