The Bloody Theatre, or Martyrs Mirror, was compiled by the Dutch Mennonite minister Thieleman J. van Braght and published in Dordrecht in 1660. It records Christians who suffered for their faith from the time of the apostles to his own day, giving special place to those who practiced baptism on confession of faith, and above all to the Anabaptists executed in the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland in the sixteenth century. Trial records, letters from prison, confessions and hymns are set out one martyr after another. The book has remained a household book among Mennonite and Amish families. This is Joseph F. Sohm's English translation, published in Elkhart, Indiana, in 1886. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
