The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle
The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is the year-by-year record of England kept by monastic scribes from the reign of Alfred the Great, around 890, until the middle of the twelfth century. Beginning with a sketch of Britain and its peoples, it runs through the Roman departure, the coming of the Saxons, the Viking wars, the reign of Alfred, the Danish kings, the Norman Conquest and the anarchy under Stephen, in entries that range from a single line to vivid eyewitness passages. This edition presents the translation of James Ingram, first published in 1823, with additional readings from J. A. Giles, collating the nine surviving manuscripts into one continuous text. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
