The Ancient Irish Epic Tale Táin Bó Cúalnge is the central story of the Ulster cycle, preserved in manuscripts from the twelfth century onward but much older in origin. Queen Medb of Connacht leads the armies of Ireland into Ulster to carry off the great Brown Bull of Cooley while the Ulster warriors lie disabled by a curse, and the sixteen-year-old hero Cú Chulainn holds the invaders at the fords alone, killing champion after champion in single combat until he must face his foster brother Ferdiad. This prose translation by Joseph Dunn, published in 1914, was the first complete English version of the longer recension in the Book of Leinster, with the verse passages rendered in verse.
