Supplemental Nights to the Book of the Thousand and One Nights — Volume 3 (of 6)
This volume of Richard Burton's Supplemental Nights, the thirteenth in his sixteen-volume Arabian Nights printed privately for the Burton Club in the 1880s, contains the tales that Antoine Galland added to his French translation in the early eighteenth century and that readers have ever since taken for the heart of the Nights: Zayn al-Asnam, Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves and Prince Ahmad and the fairy Peri-Banu. For the first two Burton worked from an Arabic manuscript discovered in Paris; the others he rendered from Galland's French, since no Arabic text was known. His foreword explains the problem, and he dedicated the volume, as the most innocent of the series, to Lord Stanley of Alderley.
