Its main tales come from manuscripts outside the standard text: the sultan al-Malik al-Zahir Baybars and the sixteen captains of police, each of whom tells a story of crime and cunning; the long romance of the slave girl Tuhfat al-Kulub; a cycle on women's wiles; Nur al-Din and Sitt al-Milah; and the tale of King Ins bin Kays and his daughter. The volume closes with essays on variants and analogues tracing these stories through Persian, Indian, Italian and medieval European versions, and with Burton's characteristically frank notes.
