Selections from Ancient Irish Poetry
Selections from Ancient Irish Poetry, published in 1911, is Kuno Meyer's anthology of early Irish verse in his own English translations. Meyer, a German scholar who did much to open medieval Irish literature to a wider audience, groups the poems under myth and saga, religious poetry, songs of nature, love poetry and bardic poetry. Among them are the sea-god's address to Bran, Deirdre's lament, "The Deer's Cry" attributed to Saint Patrick, "The Hermit's Song," the story of Liadin and Curithir, a monk's poem about his pet cat, and a short verse on the Viking terror. An introduction and notes explain the background of the literature and of each piece. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
