Riders of the Purple Sage, published in 1912, is the novel that made Zane Grey the leading writer of Westerns. In southern Utah in 1871, Jane Withersteen, heir to a great ranch and the water of Amber Spring, refuses to marry the Mormon elder Tull and is punished for befriending outsiders: her riders are drawn away, her cattle stampeded, her horses stolen. Into the settlement of Cottonwoods rides Lassiter, a gunman in black searching for the grave of his sister, while the young rider Bern Venters, hunting rustlers in the canyons, stumbles on a hidden valley and a masked rider. Grey sets his story against red rock and endless sage. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
