He describes the soul and its subtle bodies, draws on sleep, memory, double personality, apparitions and other phenomena to argue for a higher consciousness independent of the body, and presents reincarnation and the law of karma as the answer to the problems of pain and inequality. Later chapters relate the doctrine to science, evolution and the teachings of religion. The English translation is by Fred Rothwell.
