About 8 h 56 min of reading169 chapters

Sir Oliver Lodge, the British physicist known for his work on radio waves, lost his youngest son Raymond in Flanders in 1915, and he published Raymond, or Life and Death the following year. The first part is a memorial, with reminiscences and Raymond's own letters from the front, which give a vivid picture of trench life. The second part records the sittings with mediums in which Lodge and his family believed they received messages from Raymond after his death, and the third sets out Lodge's reflections on life, death and the survival of the personality. The book was widely read by grieving families during the war and widely criticized, and it remains a moving and revealing document of its time. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
